Today I am thinking about the possibilities we have for putting out newsletters.
- Postal mail
- e-mail
- Blogs
Like most scenarios there may not be a perfect solution.
Postal Mail
- Can take too long to get your message out
- Can be expensive
E-mail
- Email is fast
- Unwanted email is a major problem -unsubscribe features need to be in place
- Instead of unsubscribing properly users might mark your mail as spam
- If a person is added to an email list by someone even with good intentions your email could become unusable because you could be labeled a person that puts out spam.
Blogs
- Allow for users to add comments
- If you RSS syndicate your blogs you can be notified as new blogs are added using various ways.
- E-mail
- Desktop Notification (with widgets or gadgets)
- Homepage bookmarks
- Homepage feeds
When the user is allowed to choose their method of notification it becomes a win win situation for both your users and you as a website owner.
Blogs... used as a tool for newsletters - Hummmmm Interesting thought. We are currently testing the concept.
